In the 17th century the area developed as a residential location for the British aristocracy and around the 19th century was the focus of the development of gentlemen's clubs. Greater care undoubtedly is taken of these invaluable personal records than was formerly the case, but loss of Registers still goes on, and it may be mentioned that in more than one instance Registers have been lost, or their condition has seriously deteriorated, since they were transcribed, although it is but ten years since this series of printed Parish Registers…

About the fifteenth century, Winchester went through a time of great financial depression and numbers of the small churches fell into ruin. These printed copies will preserve the information they contain, even though the originals be lost by carelessness, theft, or fire. Moreover, registers in the past have been sometimes tampered with for wrongful purposes, as was done.in the recent Shipway pedigree case, in which forged entries, both early and late,…

In former times Upton was a dependency or chapelry of Blewbury, but since 1861, Upton and Aston Upthorpe (or Thorpe, or Throp for short) have been constituted a separate ecclesiastical parish. Under these circumstances it is not surprising that the Registers of Upton are not very continuous, and that frequent gaps are to be found. It is probable that the Registers…

It will be noticed that for a few years no returns have been found, owing, in some instances, to their having been either lost or mislaid, and in others, perhaps, to there having been no return to make.
