Wells, Somerset Wills (1890)

By the kind permission of the President of the Probate, etc., Division of the High Court of Justice, accorded to me through the Senior Registrar, I have been enabled to take extracts from the whole of the Wills contained in the first two books of Wills at the District Probate Registry, Wells. These number about six hundred, and are copies, the originals being lost.

The Will-registers were used as the basis of this index, and the filed wills as well as the act-books were afterwards examined for the purpose of obtaining supplemental information. The court-act books would undoubtedly have yielded some additional matter, but at the cost of so much labour as to have involved an indefinite postponement of the publication of the work.

Calendar of wills Northampton and Rutland 1510 - 1652

Until the year 1541 the two counties of Northampton and Rutland formed part of the great see of Lincoln. The size of that diocese, which in mediaeval times extended from the Humber to the Thames, required the existence of local courts for probate of wills and the grant of letters of administration.
